Backup Storage Media

Regardless of the repository model you choose, your data must be stored on a reliable physical or virtual storage medium. Selecting the right hardware is a crucial part of any professional backup strategy to ensure long-term data availability. Modern backup solutions like AllSync are designed to support a wide variety of storage devices to provide maximum flexibility.

Hard Disk Storage (HDD and SSD)

The capacity-to-price ratio of hard disks has been rapidly improving for many years, making them the most popular choice for data backup. The main advantages of hard disk storage are incredibly low access times, high availability, massive capacity, and ease of use. External disks can be connected via local interfaces like USB 3.0, eSATA, or USB-C, or via network technologies like Ethernet and iSCSI. Solid State Storage (SSD), also known as flash memory or thumb drives, offers even better performance and excellent portability. While SSDs were once costly, they are now a standard for fast file backup tasks where speed and durability are essential. AllSync excels at managing disk-based backups, ensuring that your data is mirrored or archived with maximum efficiency.

Magnetic Tape and Legacy Media

Magnetic tape has long been the most commonly used medium for bulk data storage, professional backup, and long-term archiving. Tape typically offers a superior capacity-to-price ratio for massive data volumes, although the gap between tape and hard disks has narrowed. As a sequential access medium, tape is ideal for continuous writing of large datasets, where it can actually be faster than some hard disks. In contrast, older media like the floppy disk have become obsolete due to their extremely low data capacity. While floppy disks were the standard in the 1980s, they are no longer a viable option for modern backup software requirements.

Optical Discs for Archiving

Recordable CDs and DVDs can still be used as specialized backup devices, especially for permanent archiving. One advantage of optical media is that they can be read on almost any machine equipped with a standard drive. Many optical formats are of the WORM type (Write Once, Read Many), which makes them useful for archives where data must not be changed. Newer formats like Blu-ray Discs have dramatically increased the amount of data possible on a single optical storage unit. However, for daily backups of large document collections, disk-based systems remain the more practical and faster alternative.

Remote Backup Services and Cloud Storage

As broadband internet access becomes more widespread, remote backup services and cloud storage are gaining significant popularity. Backing up via the internet to a remote location protects your data against worst-case scenarios like fire, flood, or local hardware theft. A drawback of remote services is that the upload speed is usually substantially slower than local data storage devices. This can be a challenge for users with very large amounts of data who need a quick recovery time. Additionally, using a third-party service involves certain risks regarding the control and privacy of sensitive information. AllSync allows you to combine the best of both worlds by supporting local backups that can be synchronized with remote locations for maximum safety.
